It was Sunday early morning; I woke with every inch of my body feeling sour, like I was in a boxing match the night before. It makes perfect sense, given the week was nothing short of a boxing match (I was in a fight with life that lasted six rounds, Monday-Saturday).
Sunday is the only day of the week where I don’t feel guilty for getting an extra 2-3 hours of sleep, but I knew I wouldn’t get to do that this Sunday because I had a lot of work to get to. (Yes, you heard that right: WORK!) But please don’t have sympathy for me; I somehow feel better knowing no one cares.
Nevertheless, I dragged myself out of bed and took a nice cold shower, hoping it would wake me up fully—and it did. I then fixed myself some breakfast and settled in at my desk in front of my computer screen. However, neither the cold shower nor the nice breakfast could get me in the mood to work. I sat for over an hour without getting anything done.
I remember sitting at my desk thinking, “There’s no way I can endure another day of work. I deserve a little break! I mean, can’t a guy just RELAX??” So, I decided to abandon the work entirely and started thinking of ways I could spend the remaining day. Staying home wasn’t an option because I knew I would eventually find myself back at my desk, and that’s the last place I wanted to be. I needed to go out! But WHERE?
I grabbed my phone and started checking for social events happening that day, and fortunately for me, I found that a local public speaking club was holding an event in the afternoon. Although it may not be the kind of fun I was looking for, it’s 10 times better than spending the day at home with my eyes glued to the computer screen.
When it came time for me to go, I got dressed in something casual and left the house. As I got to the location, however, I couldn’t believe what I saw. In what seemed like a scene out of a movie, I saw HER—MY CRUSH!! Sitting there, looking like God’s finest piece of art. My day got a whole lot better! Since childhood, I’ve always had a vivid image of what my “dream girl” looks like, and I could tell you this young lady fits that mental image so perfectly it almost feels unreal. She was dressed in all black, which perfectly complemented her skin complexion. Her hair was modestly pulled back, and she had little to no makeup on—just the way I like it.
I remember thinking, there’s no way this is real. Either I’m hallucinating or I still haven’t woken up. It’s Sunday, after all. But it’s not a dream. It’s real. SHE IS REAL!
As the event was about to commence, we all gathered in the venue, and I sat in one of the three available chairs in the front row. A few moments later, I saw her again, but she wasn’t sitting. She was actually walking towards me. Wait, what’s going on? Is she coming to say hi? We don’t even know each other that well! What’s happening?
Before I could pull my frantic thoughts together, she came and grabbed the empty chair beside me and took it to a different table. After she left, I thought about a million clever things I could have said to her—what a waste. All of this was happening so fast, so I had to pause to remind myself that I came here to relax and that I shouldn’t let her occupy so much of my headspace. So, I tried my best to avoid looking at her. But that was an impossible task, because she was sitting right in front of me, looking beautiful and glamorous like no other woman I have ever seen before.
As the event began, I felt myself easing into the atmosphere, as some of my attention went to what was happening on stage, and I was no longer tormenting myself with my intrusive thoughts. The first half of the event was delightful, with a lineup of impressive speakers gracing the stage one after the other. This is what I came here for, I thought. We then had a brief coffee break, where I had a small chat with other guests. And before you even ask—YES! I was thinking of her the whole time.
So, I couldn’t wait for the second half of the event to begin, so I could go back to being entertained. We ended our coffee break and went back into the venue for the second half of the event. I was understandably excited. It was time for me to be immersed in the show and escape my own thoughts—or at least that’s what I was hoping for. A few minutes after the second half began, the MC called out the name of the speaker who would be taking the stage… and GUESS WHO? It was her!
Here we go, I thought. There is no escaping this! A part of me was genuinely excited to hear her speak, while another part of me wanted nothing to do with her. But can you blame me?
As she made her way to the stage, I could tell she was a little nervous, which made her all the more adorable to me. She then proceeded to give her speech in the most authentic and innocent way you could imagine. Through her speech, she somehow managed to answer all of the curiosities I had about her. Her tone of voice, her movements, and most importantly, her gorgeous smile were a thing of beauty to witness. She could have told the most heinous murder story, and I’m pretty sure I would have listened to her all day long. It almost felt like she was performing for me and only for me, and NOTHING and NO ONE else mattered at that moment.
If it was ever a dream, I should have woken up by now. But it isn’t. It’s real. She is REAL!!
To say that Sunday went left would be taunting my emotions. I went out looking to relax, but I got tormented. I went out looking to be entertained, but I got entangled instead. Look, I don’t know if I’ll see her again, and I don’t know if she will ever feel the same way about me, but I do know that… I SHOULD HAVE STAYED HOME!
